The Lagos State government is giving
out electronic tablets (E-tablets) to at least 324,000 Senior Secondary School
Students.
The E-tablets also called ‘Ibile
tablets’ are expected to come with school curricular which make access to all
subjects and topics seamless.
The Special Adviser to the Governor
on Education, Mr Obafela Bank-Olemoh made this known in an exhaustive presentation
on the policy thrust of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode’s administration for the
education sector.
Biggest digital library
Bank-Olemoh stated that plans were
ongoing to construct the biggest digital library.
“The Lagos State government is
already at the planning stage of the library, while the actual establishment of
the project would commence in the next quarter of this year,’’ he explained.
The government would also build 10
new model schools with state of the art facilities while two new technical colleges
would be built in the course of the year in areas where such facilities were
urgently needed.
Biometric capturing of students
Mr Bank-Olemoh revealed that all the
students in Lagos would soon be biometrically captured and given personal
identification number.
“Plans have been concluded to
register all students in both public and private schools in the state under the
Lagos State Student Personal Identification Number (LASPIN) project to aid
proper planning,’’ he stated.
On the free meal in schools project,
Mr Bank-Olemoh stressed that the State government was currently perfecting its
framework for the eventual take off.
He added that the project was
expected to not only enhance the learning capacity of the pupils but equally
boost the economy of the state.
No more parties in schools
Meanwhile, the Lagos State Deputy
Governor, Dr. Idiat Adebule said government would no longer allow social
functions or parties in public schools and warned Private schools owners across
the state to comply with the rules and regulations guiding their operations.
Briefing Journalists in her office,
Dr. Adebule implored members of the public to report any erring school.
She affirmed that government
defaulting schools would be sanctioned accordingly.
“Government is putting a searchlight
on the standard of education in the private schools… It will no longer be
business as usual for such schools that undermine best practices. As a first
step, the
government will engage with private
school owners and proprietors to intimate them on the action plan of the
present administration towards improving the standard of education; though
government is willing to partner with private schools, they must also be
willing to adhere strictly to the acceptable standard.
“Even as private schools are partners
in the sector, we would not fold our hands and watch the standard flopped. Some
schools even operate without registering with the government. We want to urge
such schools to do the right thing or government will have no choice but to do
what it has to do,” she explained.
The Deputy Governor is also the Lagos
