The Speaker, Nigerian House of
Representatives, Yakubu Dogara has revealed that a law to create a special
agency for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) was under way in the National
Assembly as part of efforts to permanently address the challenges facing IDPs
and refugees in the country.
Mr Dogara who disclosed this when he
visited the IDPs Camp in Wassa, a suburb of the Nigerian capital, Abuja, urged
the IDPs to be calm as government was committed to the war against insurgency.
“As a way of permanently addressing
the challenges of IDPs and refugees, a law to create a special agency to that
effect was underway, and was receiving accelerated attention of both houses of
the National Assembly.” Mr. Dogara stated.
He assured the Internally Displaced
Persons from the North Eastern part of the country that government was doing
everything within its resources to attend to their plight.
The Speaker who said his mission was
to personally appraise the living conditions of the IDPs within the FCT,
pledged to reach out to the camps outside the nation’s capital as soon possible
as a part of his palliative intervention.
North-East Bill:
Late last year, the House of
Representatives initiated a bill for an Act to establish the North-East
Development Commission, which had already passed second reading.
The bill, which was sponsored by the
Speaker Yakubu Dogara, is part of efforts by the House to support government’s
plans for the rebuilding of the North-East.
IDPs Demands:
The Chairman of the Wassa camp,
Mallam Hamman Bukar, who spoke on behalf
of the IDPs, appealed to the Speaker to assist them towards urgent provision of
basic amenities in the camps.
“Mr. Speaker we want the Federal
Government to provide social amenities for us particularly potable water and
healthcare facilities. Also our children of school age have no access to
schools in this camps, help us.” Mallam Bukar stressed.
Donations:
The Speaker, accompanied by some
House of Representatives members especially those from North East donated food
items and clothing materials to the Internally Displaced Persons in the camp.
The items donated include; 250 bags
of rice, 550 bags of maize, 600 bags of millet, 200 cartons of Indomie noddles,
80 bags of sugar, 250 bags of beans, 100 bags of table salt, 100 jerry cans of
vegetable oil, 700 units of Super Print wax and 700 units of brocade material.
